FLEMISH AS A GLOBAL LANGUAGE
You may already be aware that Belgium has three official languages; Dutch, French and German. In Flanders, a region in the north of Belgium, a variant of Dutch generally known as Flemish is spoken. The Flemish language is considered, in the linguistic field, as comprising of any dialect spoken within the former County of Flanders. This area stretches from the south of the Netherlands (Zeeland) to the north of France.
The question that can legitimately be asked is whether the people of Belgium and the Dutch can understand each other. Whilst these neighbouring countries do indeed have Dutch in common, their different historical pasts have led to different ways of understanding politics and the establishment, which in turn has led to the development of very differing vocabularies.
The main difference, however, is found in pronunciation. Dutch speakers can easily tell whether someone is from Belgium or the Netherlands. To give an example, the further south you go, the softer the pronunciation of the letter ‘g’ becomes. Whereas the closer you get to the north of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague, the more pronounced the sound becomes.
As of 2020, the Flemish language has approximately eight million speakers. Spoken in Antwerp, Ghent and Bruges, it is an important historical and economic language in northern Europe.
